Vegan, Animal Cruelty Free and Halal Makeup

Nowadays, along with the increasing of human concern for nature and all its contents, there are also a lot of campaign about Vegan and Animal Cruelty Free products.

What are ‘Vegan’ and ‘Animal Cruelty Free’ mean? How about ‘Halal’ products?
Note: Because this blog will mainly discuss about beauty, I’ll continue focusing only on beauty products.

In the animal rights movement, Animal Cruelty Free is a label for products or activities that do not harm or kill animals (taken from Wikipedia, read more here). That means, Animal Cruelty Free products may contain some animal based ingredients such as honey and beeswax, but they do not test on animals.
Vegan products are even stricter. They do not contain any animal ingredients at all. All of their ingredients are made of plants.
Halal makeup is makeup that considered acceptable for use by Moslems under Islamic law. Halal makeup products cannot contain alcohol, pork, pork byproducts, or any byproducts of other animals not slaughtered according to Islamic tradition. Most vegan and mineral makeup are considered halal -- because they contain no animal products.
Halal certification can be accepted through organizations such as Food and Nutrition Council of America (USA) and Majelis Ulama Indonesia (Indonesia).
Many non-Moslems also use halal makeup, because it is considered eco-friendly, doesn't use any harsh chemicals or unnatural substances, and involves the ethical treatment of animals.

So, the bottom line is…
All vegan brands could be considered as halal and animal cruelty free, but not all halal and animal cruelty free brands are vegan.

Then, what makeup brands that already go vegan, animal cruelty free or halal?
After googling and doing some small research, I try to make a list of them. These are only brands that available on my country, Indonesia, or not yet available but already well-known and/or used by Indonesians. If you want to know about the status of other brands, please check BUAVPETA, or KARA

And please note that this is not the best list of vegan/cruelty-free/halal makeup brands; so you can check above links for the always updated lists.
If you know other brands that should or should not be on this list, please let me know.

According to Muslim Consumer Group here and Pretty Peachy Pink here, some of big companies’ brands are considered halal because they contain no haram alcohol, pork and beef fat.

Note: Please also check for 'cochineal', colorant that is made by crushing cochineal bug. The trade names listed are Cochineal / Carmine / Crimson Lake / Natural Red (C.I. 75470/ or E120). There are 2 different opinions about Cochineal halal status, the one here said that cochineal bug is halal but the others said that it’s haram.

Thank God there's a lot of Indonesian makeup/beauty brands that already got halal certification from MUI.

How about Korean makeup brands?
BUAV noted here that leading Korean cosmetics company Amore Pacific (a parent company of several well-known Korean makeup brands such as Etude, Innisfree and Laneige) is ending animal testing for its cosmetics and ingredients from May 2013. Yay for that!

Note: You can also check these useful links for further information.

I hope this post is useful enough for your information about vegan, animal cruelty free and halal makeup
I know it's not easy to start splurging on these products, if that means we must throw away all our old 'non vegan/animal cruelty free/halal' products. But we can always start as fast as we can, step by step, little by little. By using these environmental friendly products, I think we also helping to rescue our earth as well as being beautiful naturally, inside and outside.

What do you think about environmental friendly products?

Cheers,

  14. There's a canadian company called Tuesday in Love that's famous for their halal water permeable nail polish. They came out with their line of halal certified makeup. Their products are cruelty free but also child labour free. I've tried some of their stuff and really like it :)
